Effect of halogen free modification of epoxy resins on their fire retardancy levels

Abstract

Fire retardant epoxy compositions modified with halogen free flame retardants (FR) were elaborated. As FR mainly phosphorus-nitrogen compounds such as ammonium polyphosphates or melamine polyphosphates, allowing to utilize the synergy of phosphorus-nitrogen action, were used. The effects of FR type and content (both crystalline and liquid ones) on flammability of the compositions and epoxy-glass laminates were investigated. The following methods have been used: oxygen index (Tables 1-4), cone calorimeter (Fig. 1) and thermogravimetry (Fig. 2). Most effective flame retardant systems were selected and basic tests of their physicochemical properties before curing as well as curing time (Table 5) and mechanical properties after curing (Table 6) were done. No negative effects of FR used on the compositions properties were found.
