Synthesis of photosensitive poly(amide-ester-imide) coatings containing cinnamate groups and the modification of their surface properties with UV radiation

Abstract

The synthesis of poly(amide-ester-imide) containing photosensitive cinnamate groups whose structure was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy (Fig. 1.) has been presented. After deposition of the synthesized polymer on a glass support, it was subjected to thermal imidization (Fig. 2.) and then to UV irradiation in the 250-380 nm range. In order to evaluate the applicability of the obtained polymer coatings in the orientation of nematic liquid crystals, their surface properties were determined on the basis of the contact angle measurements of a standard liquid (Figs 3,4, 5). The value of the surface free energy (SFE) and its polar and dispersion components were then calculated the on the basis of the contact angle measurements obtained earlier for the polyimide coatings. It was confirmed that UV radiation of the coating leads to an increase in the SFE value. A prolongation of the duration of UV radiation caused an increase in the liophilic character of the coating leading to an increase in the polar, but a decrease in its dispersion components.
