Chemical structures and physical properties of cured segmental polyurethanes

Abstract

Segmental polyurethanes (PUR) obtained in two-stage syntheses from oligomeric ?,?-dihydroxy(ethylene-butylene adipate) and two different aromatic diisocyanates: diphenylmethane 4,4'-diisocyanate (MDI) or MDI modified with carbodiimide diisocyanate were the subjects of investigations. For chain extending the curing triol 1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethylene)propane (TMP) was used, besides typical 1,4-butanediol (Table 1). The chemical structures of PUR obtained were characterized by IR method (Table 4, Fig. 1). The effects of PUR compositions (type of diisocyanate, diol/triol ratio in the curing system and its amount) on the equilibrium swelling in dimethylformamide (Table 2 and 3) as well as mechanical properties (Table 5) were determined. The results were discussed from the point of view of peculiarity of structure of the network forming.
