Analysis of the selected heavy metals content in the lead-acid battery polymeric separator

Abstract

Results of cadmium, lead and mercury determination in the polymeric material used as an electrode separator in the lead-acid battery have been presented. Samples of the separator before use in the electrochemical processes and the waste separator samples have been compared with reference to the existing laws on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators. In the polymer separator examination [preceded by a qualitative analysis of the material using scanning electron microscopy/ energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques], a modern UltraWAVE digestion system combined with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) technique and a DMA-80 Direct Mercury Analyzer has been used. The quality of metal determination results has been evaluated using a certified PE-LD reference material containing trace amounts of analytes.
