Glycolysis of polyurethane wastes. Part I, Glycolysis agents and catalysts

Abstract

The subject of this review (25 references) is glycolysis, being one of the most important chemical processes, which could be applied in feedstock recycling of polyurethane waste. The reactions of transesterification of urethane and urea bonds [equation (1) and (2)] were presented in the introduction. Important reactions running during the complex glycolysis process [equations (3)-(7)], leading to the products’ mixture containing polyols or the compounds of similar structure but containing methane bonds, low-molecular weight mono- and dicarbamates, amines and low-molecular weight urea compounds or urea oligomers [formula (1)], were discussed. The most often used glycolysis agents, i.e. aliphatic low-molecular compounds or oligomerols containing at least two hydroxyl groups, were described. Three main groups of catalysts used in the glycolysis process, i.e. metal salts or hydroxides [formula (II)], organometallic compounds [formula (III)-(VII)] and amines were characterized. The effects of glycolysis conditions on the chemical compositions of glycolysis products were discussed.
