Study on the process of preparation of polypropylene nanocomposite with montmorillonite

Abstract

On the basis of literature data, montmorillonite (MMT) as a filler of polymeric composites was characterized, namely the structure and the possibility of its modification. The authors' investigations concerned the process of preparation of nanocomposites based on isotactic polypropylene (PP) with MMT, with use of three variants of twin-screw extrusion. The third component of nanocomposites was polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride, acting as compatibilizer of MMT/PP system (Table 1). The effects of extrusion variant and the ratios of composite components on the useful properties of the products obtained (melt flow rate, static and dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, barrier properties - see Table 2-4, Fig. 3-7) were determined. It was demonstrated that the method of nanocomposite preparation (by use of shearing - mixing configuration of the screws) let obtain MMT fully exfoliated and uniformly dispersed in a nanocomposite. It improves significantly the studied properties of nanocomposites.
