Modified bentonites as active adsorbers of styrene vapors

Abstract

Various types of bentonites characterized with high content of montmorillonite (Table 2) were modified with quaternary ammonium salts (QAS, Table 1), differing in chemical structure. Modification of bentonites with QAS changes their structures (Figs. 2-4) causing increase in the distance between the layers of clays as well as splitting of big plates. This encourages significant increase in styrene vapor adsorption by bentonites (Figs. 5-7, Table 3). This effect depends on the type of clay as well as on the types of substituents in QAS. The best results have been obtained for QAS with benzyl radical as one substituent, 10 C atoms aliphatic radical as another substituent and methyl groups as two other ones. There is a possibility to use the modified bentonite, after saturation with styrene, as a filler of unsaturated polyester resins. This would eliminate an inconvenient operation of regeneration or utilization of active carbon inset, presently used as styrene adsorbent.
