Catalysts of the synthesis of vinylester resins from epoxynovolac and unsaturated monocarboxylic acid

Abstract

Activities of four amine systems [based on commercial products - Formulae (I) - (IV)] catalyzing the addition of methacrylic acid to epoxy group of novolac have been compared. The necessity of use of two various catalysts during successive stages of the reaction have been found. Reactivity was determined on the basis of the measurements of changes of epoxy and acid numbers in course of reaction, final viscosity of the product and temperature profiles of the addition (Fig. 1 and 2, Table 1 and 2). The best catalytic system consists of 2,4,6-tris(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl) phenol (Ancamine K-54) as catalyst I and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) as catalyst II. The following properties of styrene solution of vinylester (VE) resin, prepared in the presence of this catalytic system, were characterized: reactivity, physicochemical properties before curing as well as functional properties after curing (Table 3).
