Effect of composition and phase inversion in PET/LDPE and PET/PP blends on their mechanical and rheological properties and morphological structure

Abstract

The effect of composition (in its full range) of PET/PE-LD and ET/PP mixes on their static mechanical properties, rheological roperties and structure was investigated. It was concluded hat tensile strength (sigma(M)) and flexural strength sigma(fM)), elasticity modulus (E-t) and flexural modulus (E-f), elongation at break (epsilon(B)) and Charpy notched impact trength (a(c)U) (Figs. 1-6) change abruptly with composition f the blends. Abrupt changes have been recorded upon exceeding 0% by weight content of PET in the PE-LD blend and 25% by eight in the PP mix. Melt viscosity of both blends drops - lso abruptly - with increase in PET content (Fig. 7). Abrupt hanges in mechanical and rheological properties of the nvestigated systems are caused by phase inversion, confirmed y SEM microscopic images (Figs. 10 and 11). In blends with ominating polyolefin content (90% by weight PE-LD) factures re ductile and fibrous (Fig. 8), whereas domination of PET 95% by weight) givers brittle fractures (Fig. 9).
