Properties of butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber containing precipitated aminoacid modified chalk

Abstract

The effect of modifying precipitated chalk with acidic, basic or neutral aminoacids affecting its surface properties were investigated. Modification reduces the dispersive component of surface energy (gamma(s)(D)) and the specific interaction parameter (Sf) or polar heads. Modification of calcium carbonate with aminoacids increased dibutyl phthalate adsorption. The activity of modified fillers in butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber (NBR) was studied. Modification of chalk surface by aminoacids, and aminocapronic acid in particular, significantly increases dispersion of the filler in the elastomer matrix. Effect of aminoacid type used for chalk modification on rubber characteristics, crosslink density and mechanical properties of vulcanizates was determined. NBR vulcanizates containing aminocapronic acid modified chalk attained highest crosslink density and better mechanical properties.
