Computer modeling of melt spinning from a crystallizing polymer. Part II. Applications of the mathematical model

Abstract

The model developed (cf. Part I) is used to describe melt spinning from a crystallizing poly(ethylene terephtalate) (PET). Results of the calculations are illustrated with axial profiles of local velocity, temperature, tensile stress and degree of crystallinity (Figs. 1-3, 5-8). The melt spinning involving zone heating (Figs. 9-12) allowed to disclose a limited range of spinning speeds and heating zone temperatures, consequent upon coupling of stress-induced crystallization with crystallinity-controlled solidification. This coupling also leads to multiple model solutions involving, or not involving, crystallization. The range of admissible spinning speeds is governed by the temperature of the heating zone. Model computations showed the zone heating applied in melt spinning from PET to increase considerably the amorphous orientation in fibers at moderate take-tip speeds and to reduce considerably the fiber take-up stress.
