Attempts at ultrasonic-based modeling of selected properties of multiblock elastomers

Abstract

Selected properties and structures are discussed for multiblock elastomers differing in chemical composition of soft segments based on poly(l,2-oxypropylene) (PO3) or dimerized fatty acid (DFA) and hard segments of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) (Table 1). Ultrasonic techniques are summarized and measurements are reported, including ultrasonic velocity (Fig. 1), ultrasonic attenuation (Fig. 2) and loss tangent (Figs. 5 and 6), for the elastomers examined. A model is suggested, based on the additivity of properties of soft and hard segments (Fig. 4). DMTA measurements were carried out to study relaxation processes in the elastomers. Ultrasonic measurement data were used to estimate such properties. The results achieved are believed to be a moderate success, both as regards the possibility of modeling and reconstruction of relaxation processes, especially in view of the fact that the model is fairly simple.
