Modified polyurethanes for biomedical applications

Abstract

A review with 90 references of the 1990s covering degradation of polyurethanes (PUR) in a living body with particular reference to polyol applied (polyesterol, polyetherol, polycarbonate-diols). Environmental stress cracking (ESC), metal ion- and enzyme-catalyzed oxidation of poly(ether-urethane)s are discussed. Degradation and mechanical properties of PUR are described in relation to chemical structure and content of hard and soft segments. A new type of PUR is presented, containing oligocarbonate segments, which is characterized by good mechanical properties and is resistant to oxidative and hydrolytic degradation. Bulk and surface modifications of PUR, especially heparinization and phospholipidation of PUR surface, are presented to prepare blood-compatible PUR surfaces.
