Effect of thermooxidative and photooxidative ageing processes on mechanical properties of magnetorheological elastomer composites

Abstract

The effect of thermooxidative and photooxidative aging processes on the crosslinking density and mechanical properties of ethylene-propylene (EPM), butadiene-acrylonitrile (NBR) and silicone (MVQ) magnetorheological rubber composites filled with various amounts of the micrometric magnetite particles using ionic liquids based on alkylammonium salts as additives. It was shown that the presence of the filler resulted in an increase in the crosslinking density and tensile strength of the composites. On the basis of these determinations it was found that the used filler did not deteriorate the thermo- and photooxidative aging resistance of the vulcanizates. The addition of ionic liquids based on alkylammonium salts to the rubber blend increased the reinforcing action of micrometric iron oxide. The vulcanizates containing ionic liquids showed increased crosslinking density, improved strength properties and resistance to aging processes.
