Study on the mechanical properties and structure of the compounds of PE/PVC recyclates filled with wood flour

Abstract

The compounds of PVC/PE recyclates of various compositions and composites with the matrix of these blends, containing 15, 30 and 50 wt. % wood flour were processed in the Brabender measuring mixer. The mechanical properties of the gelated compounds and composites as well as Vicat softening temperature were determined. SEM and optical microscopy examination was also performed. It has been found, that the addition of an immiscible polymer decreases the mechanical properties of the blend, and that the least advantageous properties were displayed by the compound with a PVC:PE ratio of 1 to 1. The research showed that an addition of wood filler to the matrix containing two immiscible polymers results in a more homogeneous matrix structure and consequently an improvement in the properties of composites.
