Structure and properties of cellular injection molded products

Abstract

The cellular injection molding process of three standard thermoplastics: polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE-LD) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with different content (0—2 wt. %) of the blowing agent was investigated. Blowing agents with an endothermic (BIH 70, BM 70) and exothermic (PCL 751) decomposition characteristics were applied (Table 1). It was found, that with an increase of the degree of porosity of the product the value of break stress (sr) decreased with a growing intensity, the elongation at break decreased monotonically and non-linearly and a decrease in the hardness of ready cellular parts was observed (Tables 2—5, Figures 7—9). Microscopic examination of the cross-sectional structure of the moldings was carried out using the author's stand for image analysis of porous structure. It was found, that the molding prepared from the composition with 0.8 wt. % of blowing agent displays a clearly visible solid outer layer and it shows the most uniform distribution of the pores of similar size (Figs. 10—13).
