The influence of surfactants and ionic liquids on the mechanical and magnetic properties

Abstract

Magnetic elastomer composites based on ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) filled with micro and nanoparticles of iron (II, III) oxide (Fe3O4) (Table 1) and dispersion enhancing agents (surfactants or ionic liquids) have been synthesized using a laboratory extruder. (Figs. 1—3, Table 2). The mechanical properties of the obtained vulcanizates on elongation before and after thermal or UV ageing processes was determined (Tables 3, 6 and 7). The magnetic properties of the synthesized composites were also evaluated (Tables 4 and 5). The obtained results confirm that the iron oxide nanoparticles have an positive influence on the mechanical properties of the elastomer and, moreover, the addition of the surfactant or ionic liquid enhances dispersion and inhibits the formation of Fe3O4 agglomerates. The obtained magnetic elastomers were characterized by good magnetic properties and the addition of magnetite generates a resistance to the influence of temperature and UV irradiation.
