Syntheses and properties of polyurethanes got from glycolysis products obtained from waste polyurethane foams

Abstract

The course of waste polyurethane foam glycolysis with 1,4-butylene glycol (BDO) or polyoxyethylene glycol (PEG 300), dependently on PUR foam:glycol weight ratio and the kind of glycolysis agent, was investigated (Table 1, Fig. 1 and 2). Urethane prepolymer obtained from 4,4'-methylene-diphenyldiizocyanate (MDI) and oligo(ethylene-butylene adipate) ("Poles 55/20") was then extended either with the mixture of glycolysis product with BDO or PEG 300 or with the glycolysis product itself (Table 2). The following properties of PUR obtained were measured: storage modulus (E'), tensile properties and hardness, dependently on the type of glycolysis product used (Fig. 3-6). It was found that use of glycolysis products in PUR syntheses improved their thermo-mechanical strength (expressed with E' value) at temperature below zero as well as tension set at break and hardness.
