Effect of particle size and particle surface pretreatment of fillers on selected properties of model ceramic-polymer composites used as dental fillings

Abstract

The properties of polymer matrix composites used as dental fillings are strongly affected by the presence and surface treatment of ceramic glass fillers. The proper selection of the size of filler particles, which determine mechanical properties, is a crucial problem in design of ceramic-polymer composites for dental fillings. The goal of the work was to determine the influence of average filler particle size and the effect of surface treatment on selected mechanical properties of composites based on mixture of acrylic resins: 2,2-bis-[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane (bis-GMA) and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA).
