Effect of modification of binders with SBS elastomer on their properties

Abstract

On the basis of literature data the qualitative evaluation of the effect of bitumen modification with SBS (styrene/butadiene/styrene copolymer) elastomer on the basic functional properties (Table 1) was done. The courses of ageing of bitumen were discussed. The series of bitumen systems differing in the content (3, 5 or 7 wt. %) and the type of modifier (branched or linear block modifier - symbols ElastI or ElastII, respectively) were prepared in own research. Modified binders and, for comparison, non-modified bitumen were subjected to technological ageing (RTFOT) and operation ageing (PAV). Rheological properties of these materials in the process of shearing under loading were investigated. Complex modulus (G*, Fig. 1) and phase angle tangent (tg ?, Fig. 2) were determined. It was found that the binders modified with 7 wt. % of SBS showed the best ageing resistance (Table 2).
