Experimental methods of investigations of polymer flow in injection mold channels

Abstract

An importance of the studies leading to knowledge concerning the phenomena, which take place during the polymer flow in the mold, has been discussed. The necessity of research works of both characters - simulations and experimental ones - was stressed. The wide characteristics of several experimental methods (including descriptions of procedures and comparison of advantages and drawbacks) were presented, namely: transparent (glass inserted) molds, short shot method, a method of polymer magnetization or application of a dye or lamellar filler as flow line markers. The results of own research concerning the developing of a new method of investigation of polymer flow in the mold were presented. This new method is based on injection molding of a polymer without holding phase (Fig. 11-14) what let obtain the moldings with flow lines visible on the surface. Special equipment is not needed. The only requirement is the proper choice of injection molding conditions. Especially the temperature of the mold should be lower than recommended for the polymer used.
