Laser modification of polymeric materials. Part II. Chemical reactions induced by laser beam

Abstract

The most important processes going in the surface layer (WW) of polymeric materials under the influence of laser beam energy (Fig. 1, Table 1 and 2) were discussed on the basis of literature data. Physical mechanism of formation of the radicals in some typical thermoplastic polymers has been presented (Scheme A) as well as the basic reactions of WW layer oxidation. The rules of photocrosslinking and photopolymerization initiated with laser beam, also in the presence of photoinitiators (Scheme B and C), were described. The process of heat generation in WW of irradiated polymer material and accompanied heat diffusion as well as temperature changes during modification going below the ablation threshold were characterized from the kinetic point of view.
