Influence of compatibilizer type, polypropylene molecular weigth and blending sequence on montmorillonite exfoliation in nanocomposites

Abstract

Montmorillonite exfoliation in polymer matrix is a crucial factor for obtaining a material with improved barrier properties, reduced flammabi-lity, higher elastic modulus and tensile strength. One of the ways to obtain polypropylene based nanocomposite with montmorillonite involves an appli-cation of compatibilizcrs, for example maleic anhydride or acrylic acid grafted polypropylene. The effects of blending sequence, polypropylene molecular weight, and properties of a compatibilizer on exfoliation of montmorillonite were studied.
