Syntheses of monomers containing hydrophilic sulfonate groups and waterborne polyester resins based on them

Abstract

A method of the synthesis of hydrophilic monomer with sulfonate and hydroxyl groups, namely sodium salt of 2,3-dihydroxypropane sulfonic acid [NaDHPS, Formula (II)], being able to build-in into polyester chain has been elaborated. It was prepared with high selectivity and yield (93 %) from sodium salt of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropane sulfonic acid in base environment of K2CO3 [reaction (3)]. Mechanism of this reaction in which except NaDHPS also allyl derivative of Formula (IV) forms in defined conditions (in the presence of NaOH) was discussed on the basis of 1H and 13C NMR investigations' results (Figs. 1-4) and literature data as well. NaDHPS was used as a substrate in two-stage process of unsaturated polyester resin preparation (Scheme A). Other reagents were as follows: maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, trimethylolpropane monoallyl ether and 1,2-propylene glycol. The content of sulfonic monomer in the resin obtained was 2.8 wt. %.
