Thixotropic compositions of unsaturated polyester resins with modified smectic clays

Abstract

The results of studies on smectic clays' modification with quaternary ammonium salts differing in chemical structures (QAS, Table 1, Fig. 1 and 2) have been presented. The effects of the products obtained on selected properties of commercial unsaturated polyester resin (UP) are also presented. Natural smectic clays (bentonites) of high montmorillonite contents (Table 2) were used. It was found that QASs (in pure form or bounded in bentonite) significantly improve UP resin stability at temp. 70 °C (Table 3), practically not influencing gelation time (Table 4). Incorporation of up to 2 % of modified bentonite to UP resin leads to thixotropic composition (Fig. 3, Table 5) showing high thixotropy index (Table 6). Modified bentonites added to UP resin nearly do not undergo sedimentation (Fig. 4). UP compositions with bentonites modified with QAS containing both aromatic and long chain aliphatic substituents show better rheological properties than ones containing bentonites modified with QAS with only aliphatic substituents.
