The effect of polyamide and polyether block length on the structure and properties of poly[(tetramethylene terephthalate)-block-(oxytetramethylene)-block-(e-caprolaktam)] elastomer

Abstract

Title ternary multiblock terpolymers -(PBT-b-PTMO-b-PA6)-(n) constituting polymer systems in which one of the three blocks (PBT) does not dissolve in the PA6 block phase (hard phase) and, depending on its molecular weight, does not dissolve at all or only slightly in the PTMO block phase (soft phase) have been obtained. DSC and DMTA were applied to investigate the effect of PA6 and PBT block size on the structure, phase separation and thermal properties of such products. Separation degrees of soft, hard and intermediate phases have been calculated. Terpolymers were compared with the previously described by the author [4]-(PBT-b-PTMO-b-PA12)-(n), elastomers, where the rigid PBT block with appropriately chosen molecular weight dissolves in the hard PA12 phase blocks and partly dissolves in the soft phase, imparting typical properties of thermoplastic elastomers. Presence of an additional rigid block non-soluble or weakly soluble in the other blocks (e.g. in the -(PBT-b-PTMO-b-PA6)-(n) terpolymers) results in engineering plastics possessing features of reinforcing polymers.
