Synthesis of aliphatic polyesters of various architectures by the controlled ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters

Abstract

A review covering 80 references presents recent studies on the controlled synthesis of poly(aliphatic ester)s (PAE's), mostly including poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly(L-lactide). In the introduction, general features and practical applications of PAE's, the latter resulting mostly from ability of these polymers to (bio) degradation, are briefly discussed; polymerization methods leading to PAE's are also presented. hen, the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone CL) and L,L-dilactide (LA), including thermodynamic and inetic polymerizability of CL and LA is described. Finally, ecently elaborated methods of synthesis, of poly(epsilon- aprolactone)s and poly(L-dilactide)s of various architectures, uch as linear homopolymers, and star-shaped polymers are resented in a more detail.
