The effect of polyurethane grafted onto styrene/styrenesulfonic acid copolymer on the morphology of various polymer blends

Abstract

Polyurethane grafted onto styrene/styrenesulfonic acid copolymer has been used as a compatibilizer in the following systems: polystyrene-thermoplastic polyurethane (PS/TPUR), terpolymer acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene-thermoplastic polyurethane (ABS/TPUR) and polyamide 6-ABS (PA6/ABS). On the basis of the results of transmission electron microscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry investigations the effect of compatibilizer on the blends' morphologies has been determined (Figs. 1-6). When the compatibilizer is present in PS/TPUR system, an additional morphology element in the form of microspheres consisted of PS and TPUR appears. In ABS/TPUR system the compatibilizer presence causes the dispersed phase (TPUR) size decreasing while in the case of PA6/ABS system it changes the adhesion degree betwen dispersed phase and a matrix.
