Polyamide 6 modified with silsesquioxane prepared via anionic polymerization of e-caprolactam

Abstract

The anionic polymerization of e-caprolactam containing the dispersed silsesquioxane (0.1 or 0.5 % by weight) was carried out. The study of reaction kinetics (Fig. 1 and 2, Table 1) and degree of monomer conversion (Fig. 3) based on the temperature measurements indicated a slowdown in the polymerization process at 0.5 wt.% silsesquioxane content in the reaction mixture. An investigation of the kinetics of crystallization led to the conclusion that an addition of silsesquioxane resulted in a decrease in the crystallization rate (Fig. 1 and 2, Table 1) and crystallization degree (DSC results, Table 2) of polyamide 6. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of PA 6 and its composites was determined using DMTA measurements (Fig. 6, Table 3). It was shown that the values of storage modulus (E') of the composites in the temperature range between 0 and 90 °C were higher as compared to the modulus of neat polyamide 6 (Fig. 7). It was also observed that with an increase of the silsesquioxane content in the PA 6 composite, a decrease in the casting shrinkage (Fig. 4) is observed along with an increase in the water sorption (Fig. 5).
