Polymers with silver nanoparticles - selected systems, preparation, properties and applications

Abstract

This paper constitutes a review of the literature over the recent ten-year period in the field of application of silver as a component of polymeric nanocomposites. The methods of preparation of silver nanoparticles as well as their properties have been presented. The synthesis of polymer/Ag nanocomposites, the role played by the polymeric matrix and the physical, chemical and biological properties of these composite systems have been discussed. The most important analytical techniques as well as their applicability in the characterization of polymer/silver nanocomposites were also discussed. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of antimicrobial activity of the modifying silver particles which enables the potential application of these nanocomposites in medicine and household appliances.
