Polyurethane composites with nanosilica modified with isocyanate groups

Abstract

Nanocomposites with polyurethane matrix filled with non-modified silica or silica modified with isocyanate groups were prepared in situ, in polymerization processes. Nanoparticles dimensions were evaluated on the basis of Zeta potential changes (Fig. 2, 3). The structures of nanosilica (Fig. 1) and nanocomposites obtained (Fig. 7, 8) were observed using HR SEM method. The degree of nanofiller distribution in the matrix was evaluated (Fig. 6). The structures of nanocomposites were confirmed by FT-IR spectra (Fig. 4, 5) and DSC method (Fig. 9, 10). Glass transition temperature has been determined (Fig. 11). The effects of the type and amount of silica used on abrasion resistance, contact angle, density and tensile properties of the materials obtained (Fig. 12-17, Table 1) were investigated. An introduction of nanofiller to PUR matrix limits the phase separation of soft and hard segments in polyurethane. Filling of PUR with 1 or 2 wt. % of nanosilica improves mechanical strength of polyurethanes as well as their abrasion resistance.
