Holographic diffraction gratings in functionalized polyamide imides

Abstract

The paper recapitulates the results of own research concerning the holographic diffraction grating recording for series of polyamide imides (PAI) functionalized with azobenzene chromophores. The polymers differed in the backbone chain structure, in substituents in azobenzene group and this group position in the chain as well as in chromophore content (Scheme A, Table 2). Holographic diffraction grating recording was investigated using Ar+ laser beam at 488 and 514.5nm wavelength (Table 1, Fig. 1). The measurements were done at two variants of configurations of laser beam polarization i.e. s-s or s-p (Fig. 2). The polymers show diffraction efficiency up to 3.6% (Table 3 and 4). The formation of surface relief gratings (SRG), characterized by regular sinusoidal surface modulation, has been observed with use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) (Fig. 3 and 4). Dependences of kinetics of diffraction grating recording and the depth of surface modulation on PAI functionalization were discussed.
