Application of in-line measurement technique for evaluation of rheological properties of polyethylene/calcium carbonate composites

Abstract

The results of investigations of the rheological properties of composites based on low density polyethylene (PE-LD) with commercial unmodified calcium carbonate (7, 14, 21 and 28 wt % CaCO3), produced using twin-screw extrusion process, are presented. The measurements were carried out using in-line extrusion rheometer with cylindrical measuring nozzles with different ratio of L/D. The rheological properties of the composites were evaluated using the Ostwald-de Waele power law model. The effects of the addition of CaCO3 on the density of the resulting composites under the processing conditions (p-v-T characteristics) and the melt mass flow rate (MFR) were also investigated. The use of in-line technique allowed for the determination of rheological parameters of the composites such as shear stress, shear rate, flow exponent, Rabinowitsch and Bagley corrections, flow and viscosity curves in real conditions of the extrusion process.
