Studies on the smoke formation and heat release rates of unmodified and flame retardant-modified epoxy materials

Abstract

Studies on the influence of selected flame retardants on the ignition and the combustion properties of epoxy materials have been presented. The epoxy resin Epidian 5 (Ep 5) was modified with a single or a mixture of two antipyrine as follows: 3 or 6 wt. % of Exolite, 3 or 5 wt.% of Nanomer, 3 wt.% of Nanomer and 3 wt. % of Exolite, or 3 wt. % of Nanomer and 6 wt. % of Exolite (Table 1). The smoke formation and heat release rate, the flammability of the material, the smoke density and toxicity of the volatile gas products released during the decomposition of the unmodified epoxy resin (UEp 5) and its modified species with flame retardants were all determined according to the cone calorimetric method under various heat flux conditions (Tables 2—6, Figs. 1—8). Taking into consideration the fire regulations for materials, the most effective flame retarding modification results were observed in the case of the application of a mixture of two flame retardants — 3 wt.% of Nanomer and 6 wt. % of Exolite.
