Effects of the conditions of solvent interactions on the protective properties of crosslinked hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber

Abstract

Effect of various interaction conditions of solvents (non-polar cyclohexane and polar butyl acetate) with polar, dicumyl peroxide-crosslinked, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (HNBR) — unfilled, containing layered aluminosilicate nanofiller (5.0 phr) or conventional carbon black N550 (4.4 phr), on the barrier properties of HNBR was studied. The barrier properties were analysed on the basis of breakthrough time of crosslinked rubber by polar or non-polar solvent (Fig. 1—3). It has been found that, irrespective of the presence and the kind of filler, the breakthrough time of crosslinked HNBR by cyclohexane in the conditions of repeated intermittent contact (tpPN) is longer for 40—100 min, and by butyl acetate for 40—80 min, than for single continuous contact exposure: tp = 260—325 min (cyclohexane) and tp = 33—75 min (butyl acetate) (Table 1). The tpPN value depends on the conditions of multiple exposure to the solvent, the time elapsed between subsequent contacts with solvent (10 or 20 min) as well as on the kind of filler incorporated. The addition of layered aluminosilicate nanofiller increases the breakthrough time of crosslinked HNBR by polar butyl acetate to a greater extent than in the case of carbon black.
