Manufacturing and properties of metal-polymer type hybrid elements

Abstract

The basic techniques of manufacturing of metal-polymer type hybrid elements were presented. Insert technique consists in preparation of elements with metal mold inserts by injection molding method. Outsert technique let improve the functionality of simple metal profiles by injection molding of polymer sub-elements. In the PMA (plastic metal assembly) method the classic assembly of polymer stiffening pieces or finning (produced by injection molding) in thin-wall steel profiles, manufactures the hybrid elements. In the MOM (metal over molding) method the direct injection molding of polymer strengthening finnings into thin-wall steel profiles is applied. Two similar techniques: Metal-Gaim (metal - gas assisted injection molding) and Metal-Waim (metal - water assisted injection molding) were also discussed. They both allow producing the hybrid elements made of metal profiles and polymer hollow strengthening parts. Polymer parts are made by injection molding and subsequent removing of superfluous polymer with use of inert gas or water, dependently on the method used. The effects of shape and spacing of polymer strengthening ribs on bending strength and torsional strength of hybrid elements were also discussed. It was demonstrated that metal-polymer type hybrid elements showed better mechanical properties in relation to the weight than conventional metal parts.
