Determination of hydroxyl groups in acetone environment as a result of the reaction with pyromellitic dianhydride, catalysed with 1-methylimidazole

Abstract

A quick and precise method of determination of organic hydroxyl groups content is presented. The method is based on hydroxyl groups acylation with pyromellitic dianhydride (DBPM) in acetone, catalyzed with 1-methylimidazole (MIA). Acylation occurs within 5 minutes at room temperature and the excess of DBPM is quickly hydrolyzed. This method is applicable for aliphatic hydroxyl groups determination in alcohols, polyesters and polyethers (Tables 1, 2 and 3). Phenolic and epoxy groups do not react in the reaction conditions. The precision of the method is as follows: repeatability (expressed as RSD(r)) 2 % and reproducibility (expressed as RSD(R)) 3 %.
