Pyrolysis gas chromatography and its new possibilites in the analysis of polymers

Abstract

Summary -Major conditions are formulated to make pyrolysis gas chromatography (PyGC) a method that yields reliable and repeatable results, especially when nonvolatile organic substances (polymers) are analyzed. Equipment for PyGC is characterized and examples are given of studies on various types of polymers. Author's own modification of PyGC is presented, involving the use of a pyrolysis attachment with the mobile reaction zone. The resulting data are compared with those obtained by conventional PyGC (Fig. 5). A two-step analysis by the modified method is described, applicable to materials containing volatile and nonvolatile species.
