Oxidation and desorption of oxygen from the upper layer of corona treated polypropylene film

Abstract

Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study oxidation in the upper layer of biaxially oriented PP film (BOPP). The layers examined were 0.6, 1.9 and 3.7 nm deep, corresponding to photoelectron take-off angles of 10°, 30° and 90°. X-ray and ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), associated with the study method, were found to promote desorption of oxygen from the upper layer. In the films exhibiting high activation specific energies (Ej > 30 kj/m2), this desorption was found to deplete the external layer about 2 nm deep in oxygen as compared with deeper layers (Table 4, Sample 6). This depletion is one of the sources of error in the XPS method used to study polymer film upper layers.
