Recent achievements and applications of silsesquioxane-based hybrid materials – an overview

Abstract

In recent years, there has been increasing research interest concerning silsesquioxane (SQ)-based hybrid materials. In this review numerous potential applications including engineering, catalysis, biomedical, and drug delivery systems are presented concerning development in the last 2-3 years. Well defined and tailor made cubic silsesquioxanes have high stability because of its inorganic Si-O-Si core, moreover the functions can be tuned via varying peripheral substituents. The rigid Si-O-Si inorganic core and multi-functionality make cubic silsesquioxanes ideal candidates in the wide range of innovative materials in chemical and biomedical disciplines.
