Polyesters and polyester carbonates for controlled drug delivery. Part II. Implantable systems

Abstract

Compared with injectable drug delivery systems (DDS), pharmaceutical implants can provide prolonged drug release, delivery of a higher amount of bioactive agent into the site of action and a higher local drug concentration. Simultaneously, these implants are simple to process and provide a reduction in drug toxicity that is typical for systemic administration. This article presents the composition, application and methods of processing of the implantable drug delivery systems that have already entered the market.
