Coagents for peroxide crosslinking of ethylene-propylene copolymer

Abstract

The rubber compounds of ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM), silica and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) with addition of nanosized particles of modified calcium and magnesium oxides as coagents were prepared. The samples were vulcanized at 160 °C for 40 minutes. The crosslink density and mechanical properties of the vulcanizates were determined. The effect of coagent type on the distribution of crosslinks in the elastomer network was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The prepared samples were also examined for heat-shrinkable properties. It was found that the use of coagent allows to obtain composites with a shape memory effect, which show satisfactory mechanical properties.
