Laser modification of polymeric materials. Part 1. Physical base of operation and criteria of choice of lasers

Abstract

On the basis of literature review the fundamentals of lasers’ operation were discussed (Fig. 1 and 2). The general classification of lasers (Table 3, Fig. 3) and the principles of action of two-, three- and four-level lasers (Fig. 4 and 5) were presented. Selected phenomena going in the materials as the results of laser irradiation were described, among others linear and non-linear absorption. The significance of absorption coefficient and laser light reflection coefficient in the processes of modifications of surface layers (WW) of polymeric materials has been stressed (Table 1, Fig. 6). Basic criteria of selection of lasers suitable for this application were given. Possibilities and limitations of lasers in modification of polymeric materials’ surface layers have been marked.
