Microscopic investigations of polymer flow in the runners of 16-cavity injection mold

Abstract

The results of investigations of polymer imbalanced flow in 16-cavity injection mold with balanced set of cold runners (Fig. 1 and 2) were presented. Such mold is an example of the molds designed for small size parts' manufacturing. In this case disadvantageous effect of polymer imbalanced flow in the runners on moldings properties is significant (Fig. 3). Microscopic investigations showed that the change in flow direction in the runners caused the flow asymmetry in runner cross-section (Fig. 5 and 6). This is the reason of inequality in cavities' filling (Fig. 7 and 8) in the construction of the system discussed. Uneven temperature distribution in the mold across the parting plane, occurring after a few injection cycles (thermovision investigations), additionally influences the imbalance effect (Fig. 4). The differences in the structures of the moldings coming from particular cavities were characterized (Fig. 9 and 10) and the reasons of the phenomenon were interpreted.
