Influence of halloysite on the structure, thermal and mechanical properties of polyamide 6

Abstract

Composites of modified halloysite and polyamide 6 (PA 6) have been synthesized by the thermoplastic processing method and their mechanical and thermal properties as well as structure studied. The layered mineral samples modified with ultrasound and then with gelatin (codenamed HUŻ) were found to have a positive influence on the properties of the neat polymer. EDS microanalysis of the modified halloysite revealed the presence of carbon and nitrogen on its surface, an increase in its particle size as well as a decrease in the value of Zeta Potential (z). 3 and 5 wt.% of the modified layered mineral was used for filling the polymer. The thermal and mechanical properties as well as the structure of the obtained composites were studied by using TG, DSC and SEM analysis, respectively. SEM images of the brittle fracture of the composite surface revealed a uniform dispersion of the HUŻ filler species particles in the polymer matrix. The obtained composites exhibited enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability was comparable to that of the virgin polymer.
