Properties of polyethylene filled with magnesium hydroxide modified with a silane compound and promoted with iron(III) acetylacetonate

Abstract

In order to ensure the flame retardancy of polymers, popular non-toxic hydroxides of aluminum and magnesium are introduced into it in large amounts. This however adversely inhibits processing possibilities and worsens the functional properties of the final product. The performed studies confirm that the addition of various amounts of iron(III) acetylacetonane [Fe(acac)3] can improve selected properties of PE-LD filled with 50-65 cg/g of magnesium hydroxide (MH) previously modified with a silane compound. The melt flow rate (MFR) (Fig. 1), tensile properties (Table 3, Fig. 2) density (d) were determined. Furthermore, the combustibility of the composites based on their oxygen flame tests was evaluated (Fig. 4, Table 3). The addition of Fe(acac)3 improved the flame retardant as well as the tensile properties of the composites. The main disadvantage of Fe(acac)3 application in flame retardancy of polymers is the reduction of the melt flow rate values.
