Application of modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) for polymers characterization

Abstract

A review concerning principles and application of modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC), based on the literature data of the years mainly 1996-2000. MDSC method, being a variety of DSC one, uses a sinusoidal programme of temperature rising for the polymer property investigations. Data obtained, after the proper mathematical treatment (using Fourier transformation) allow to separate the reversible and irreversible components of thermal transitions, measure the specific heat directly, improve the resolution of adjacent and overlapping phenomena, analyze the subtle transitions. Examples of practical application of MDSC method for: specific heat determination, investigation of kinetics, especially taking into consideration the processes of thermosetting polymers crosslinking, analyses of glass transition and relaxation processes as well as for the assessment of processes courses of polymer melting and crystallization, are presented.
